Biography

Dr. Murphy is a multi-award winning teacher, researcher, and full professor. He edits the academic journal Management Decision and authored the book Mutiny and Its Bounty: Leadership Lessons from the Age of Discovery, published by Yale University Press.  He lectures internationally and consults to entrepreneurs and firms in Chicago and beyond and is President of the Board of Directors of the non-profit Chicago Cultural Alliance.  

He is former Chair of the Management History Division of the Academy of Management. He has published extensively in leading scholarly journals and his work has been highlighted in Businessweek, USA Today, The Globe and Mail, US News and World Report, Financial Times, Harvard Business Review, CCTV News, WTTW Chicago, and by other major outlets.  His ability to explain entrepreneurial phenomena clearly and compellingly across different contexts has made him popular with students and in the media.  

In 2016, Dr. Murphy was selected for ChicagoInno's 50 on Fire for his impact on the Chicago innovation economy.  He is a speaker of Mandarin Chinese and his professional activities focus on social enterprise, entrepreneurship, business history, and US-China strategic management contexts.
