Biography

Werner F.M. De Bondt is a professor emeritus in the Department of Finance & Real Estate at the Driehaus College of Business. Before taking emeritus status in 2019, De Bondt served as a professor of finance. He is one of the founders of the field of behavioral finance and the founding director of the Driehaus Center for Behavioral Finance at DePaul.

De Bondt has examined key concepts of bounded rationality, which is people's tendency to exaggerate the true impact of new information, their bent toward wishful thinking or their biased perceptions of risk. De Bondt's research articles have appeared in several books and scholarly journals, including the Journal of Finance, the Financial Analysts Journal, the American Economic Review and the European Economic Review. His work on stock market overreaction and the speculative dynamics of world financial markets has received a great deal of attention in academia and industry.

De Bondt is a frequent speaker to academics and investment professionals around the world. De Bondt is also fluent in Dutch, French, German and English. In past years, he was a member of the faculty at various universities in Europe, including Erasmus University Rotterdam, the University of Zurich, the University of Neuchatel and the University of Luxembourg. Between 1992 and 2003, he was the Frank Graner Professor of Investment Management at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.​
