Biography
Ray Whittington is a professor at the School of Accountancy & MIS, where he served two impressive tenures as director, before and after his 10-year run as dean of the business college from 2006 to 2017. Under his leadership, the School of Accountancy & MIS successfully earned a five-year AACSB accreditation renewal, received a $1 million gift from RSM US Foundation to promote academic excellence, integrated more data analytics into the undergraduate accounting curriculum as part of a larger curriculum revision, and established new Deloitte scholarships. As dean, the business college was renamed for distinguished alumnus Richard H. Driehaus, celebrated a centennial and earned high rankings for its academic quality. He has authored four textbooks and written numerous articles on accounting for magazines and journals.
Whittington previously served from 1993 to 1997 as director of the School of Accountancy at San Diego State University, where he taught for 14 years and earned three outstanding professor awards. He previously worked as director of auditing research for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and as a senior auditor for KPMG Peat Marwick. Whittington also was vice chairman of the AICPA's Auditing Standards Board when the board was responsible for developing standards for audits of public and non-public companies.
