New Professor Joins MACC Program

Tawei (David) Wang is the newest faculty member to join DePaul University's School of Accountancy and Management Information Systems.

A self-proclaimed "IT guy" and follower of interdisciplinary trends, Assistant Professor Wang will be a significant addition to the Master of Accountancy (MACC) program, bringing a fresh skillset that combines accounting, analytics and expertise in new technologies.

"DePaul has a great reputation, a strong alumni group, really exceptional faculty and students, and a great connection with the industry," says Wang. "That is an excellent environment for teaching business as we can tie academic learning with actual business operations."

While no stranger to the Midwest, having received his PhD in management information systems from Purdue University, Wang comes to DePaul from Shidler College of Business at the University of Hawaii, where he taught undergraduate and graduate accounting courses for the last five years. Wang holds a master's degree in accounting from National Taiwan University, where he also received his bachelor's in accounting.

At DePaul, Wang will be teaching data analytics and data mining courses within the MACC program. The MACC program prepares students for forensic accounting and internal auditing roles that are in high demand by employers. The program is designed to provide students with the real-world skills employers seek.

"As a teacher, I love to have different types of exercises in the classroom because I believe that the best way to learn is organically or intuitively," says Wang. "I design lectures and assignments to make students work and understand a concept first and then apply them to real-world situations."

Wang is an expert in the areas of IT management and audit, and security and risk management, in addition to data analytics and mining. These subjects propel his research.

Wang's most recent scholarly work focuses on social media. He is researching how companies respond to their competitor's product recalls to see if their reactions manipulate the media momentum to affect final sales revenues. He also is looking at other uses for information technology and how it generates different business transformations across a 20-year time period.
